Surprise visit to City’s Lavender Hill CRU tenants

As part of the City of Cape Town’s ongoing financial support awareness drive, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi, today, 12 April 2022, visited City public housing tenants in Lavender Hill to encourage them to make use of the available assistance and to approach the City if they are experiencing financial difficulty. One tenant was also lauded for her excellent payment history, with a little surprise ahead of Easter.

Councillor Booi and officials in the City’s Public Housing Department visited residents in Lavender Hill and handed over sweet treats to a very special tenant, Mrs Johanna Cupido, who has her rental up to date and has an excellent payment history.

‘Mrs Cupido is one example of many tenants who diligently pay their rental every month and we thank all residents who pay, despite their difficult circumstances. Today we thank residents like Mrs Cupido and we remind tenants to please approach us should they face financial challenges.

‘Rental income is used for the important maintenance and upgrades, as well as for future planned work. We ask residents to pay their rent diligently to ensure our CRUs are well maintained and upgraded. Tenants who are struggling to make regular rental payments or who are in arrears may approach us for assistance and enter into a payment arrangement with us. Help is available. Tenants may phone their local housing office to make an appointment so that the City may assist. The City also has an historic debt write off drive with about R2 billion still available to residents with old City debt. Tenants are encouraged to visit their local housing office for more information,’ said Councillor Booi.

Our housing offices are open on weekdays from 08:00 to 15:00.

What to expect when visiting an office:

Covid-19 screening at the entrances
Limited number of customers allowed in at a time, if applicable
Only customers wearing masks will be allowed entry into our offices
Social distancing is required and must be adhered to
Limited daily transactions, please make an appointment
The elderly and disabled will be given preference

A number of transactions can be completed at the offices including:

logging service requests such as maintenance
applying for indigent relief grants
making arrangements for debt repayment on accounts
applying for transfer of tenancy
signing of lease agreements
applying to renew lease agreements
the use of the free call lines in foyers
